Response to: Rant on Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Everyone seems to side with the Israelis in this conflict. Understandably they are the dominate force, however that does not make them the force of good. There is minimal media coverage on the Palestinian’s perspective and yet they are the ones who face the most suffering. I honestly did not understand much about the sources of the Israeli-Palestinian issues but after reading this I feel like I have a better understanding of the origins of this conflict and who truly is the victim…
People cannot return to their homes because Israel is a self-proclaimed jewish territory…
The Palestinian Territory has been shrinking for decades.
Why do the Israelis hold so much power…
Palestine may disappear entirely
And the world is seemingly okay with blatant discrimination.
I hear you. I’m not okay with blatant discrimination either. There is a lot of healing that needs to be done. In my opinion one of the biggest issues (aside from religion) with this conflict is that too many outside countries are involved business of the Israelis and Palestinians. The U.S. especially needs to stop treating other countries like they are children and let them decide things for themselves…
But aside from politicizing it the saddest story is that of the people. The lives affected by this very real tension and conflict. I spent my summer in Israel and I saw it first hand.
I can’t confidently say I have no biases but continue to question myself and seek answers from both sides. That said, I wish the violence would end. Part of my family is there. Hearing that Yanay’s town was hit by a rocket, watching my friends be called from their lives to go back to the army, wondering about how things will turn out… it’s all overwhelming for me. I agree that something needs to be done for the Palestinian people but I don’t think the answer to their problems is to kill Israeli’s or kick them out. There has to be another way. There is not just one “victim” and to say one side has the most suffering is a slippery slope.
The situation is more complex than any one article, source, or book can let on. Each group has endured a great amount of suffering and oppression. Everyone discusses the Palestine-Israeli conflicts but few bother to go back further than that. Palestinian’s were treated poorly and oppressed by Arab countries as well. Let’s not forget that Palestine is not all Muslim. There is/was a significant Christian population and these people have been treated like 2nd class citizens by Muslim extremists. I feel like I’m rambling but as much as I want the conflict to be black and white it is not.
I appreciate you sharing this article. It encourages awareness and open conversation. Our freedom of speech is too often taken for granted. I’ve watched a documentary and read tons of articles. Here is a somewhat controversial video with another perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63hTOaRu7h4
And here is a picture of my two girls Talya and Alona. I can’t be impartial to this issue when I feel like they are at risk. I don’t want them to live their lives in fear. I hope in the face of all that they witness they’ll still learn to be open minded and compassionate without prejudice…
